Iowa Masonic Library "Good Luck" Spoon
This sterling silver commemorative spoon shows a picture of the Iowa Masonic Library building as it was c.1884. On the handle are many different “good luck” symbols. These include a horseshoe, swastika, four-leaf clover, wish-bone and the words “Good Luck.” Before the rise of Adolf Hitler and his use of the swastika as a symbol for the National Socialist Party in Germany in the 1930’s, the swastika was known and used as a symbol of good luck. In fact, the word “swastika” is a Sanskrit word meaning “blessing, benediction, or good luck.” Item No. 2005.5 in the collection of the Iowa Masonic Library, Cedar Rapids.
